This Sunday, Covenant begins observing the newest liturgical season, “Kingdomtide.” “Ordinary Time” the period between Pentecost and Advent is 25-37 Sundays, depending on the calendar. In the late 1930s, some Protestant churches began observing the second half of Ordinary times as Kingdomtide. So, we follow the tradition of “Kingdomtide,” here at Covenant.
During Kingdomtide the church seeks ways to live out that portion of the prayer Jesus taught us the prayer that says, “Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven.” It requires a commitment to living out of our faith. At Covenant, living out our vision of “Being an inclusive community of faith – Offering Hope + Showing Faithfulness + Sharing Joy” is the way we help God’s Kingdom on earth become “The Kingdom of Love and Light.” Further, we believe living in fidelity to that part of our mission “to care about one another in Christ,” furthers God’s Kingdom on earth becoming “The Kingdom of Love and Light.”
The assigned sacred text for this week calls for our full commitment to making God’s Kingdom come on earth. Consider these words from Romans 12: “I appeal to you therefore, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God — what is good and acceptable and perfect.” Doing this helps to make God’s kingdom on earth, “The Kingdom of Love and Light.”
