On Wednesday evening, I used the story of the woman who washed Jesus’ feet with her tears and dried them with her hair to highlight the fact that every person we meet has around his or her neck an invisible sign which says “Do I matter to you?” In the assigned text this Sunday from Luke 17 of “The Healing of the Ten Lepers,” that sign was both invisible and visible.
The “God is Still Speaking” Campaign of the United Church of Christ (UCC) started in 2004 to remind us that we do matter to God and God still has a lot more to say to us. It’s also designed to help folks understand that there is still hope and still much for which we need to be grateful.
The campaign is still used to extend an extravagant welcome to all; because no matter who you are, or where you are on life’s journey, you are welcome here at the UCC. It is still designed to give hope that regardless of who you are, in your gratitude you with be strengthened and nurtured in your faith and blessed to reach out to others with your God-given gifts and talents.
At a time when religion is too often portrayed as narrow-minded and exclusive, we present a different vision:
- Where God is all-loving and inclusive.
- Where the Church of Jesus Christ welcomes and accepts everyone as they are.
- Where your mind is nourished as much as your soul.
- Where Jesus the healer meets Jesus the revolutionary.
- Where together we grow a just and peaceful world.
So, even in this week’s story of the story of “The Healing of Ten Lepers,” “God is Still Speaking” an eternal message of gratitude to us today. How do we respond? Our current stewardship campaign asks, “What Shall We Bring?”
However, join us this Sunday as the sermon will ask “It’s 2019, Can you still hear Jesus?” based on Luke 17:11-19.
