NOTE FROM PASTOR J R FOR SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 2012
This Sunday is the Twelfth Sunday of Kingdomtide. November is the traditional time churches launch their Stewardship emphasis for the next year. Covenant did so last Sunday while blessed by moving testimonies from Judy Hand-Truitt, Erie Jackson, and Jim Ball of how “Because of You, Covenant Changes Lives.” During Wednesday Night Life Lessons we witnessed another example.
November is best known for Thanksgiving Day. It’s a time when families, whether of blood, faith and choice, decked out in autumn hues and come together for a wonderful meal. This year I will be blessed to have several relatives coming from all over to join me in Birmingham for Thanksgiving Dinner. We will have a hearty spread of roasted turkey with all the ‘fixins” including plenty of Thanksgiving Dressing.
However, there is a deeper meaning to the festivities than just the food. It is one of unity and gratitude. So, yes, this holiday is about “Thanksgiving Dressing: but not that dressing.” And God calls for us to dress for thanksgiving. Colossians 3:12 tells us how, saying, “Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved; clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, gentleness and patience.” Adorning ourselves as such to God, makes for delicious “Thanksgiving Dressing; but not that Dressing.”
So, join us this Sunday for worship, in-person, by Zoom, Facebook Livestream or YouTube. My sermon will be “Thanksgiving Dressing: But Not That Dressing!” based on “Colossians 3:12-17.”
