NOTE FROM PASTOR JR FOR SUNDAY, JULY 30, 2023
This Sunday is The Ninth Sunday After Pentecost. The weather lately has been such that it will warm your body very quickly when you go outside. However, the assigned scripture Romans 8 for this Sunday is one that has been around to warm our spirit for nearly 2,000 years. It’s truth goes back beyond the beginning of creation.
It is a truth that should be the most distinguishing feature of every worship service. That truth is: “…nothing can separate us from the love of God.” Affirmation of this thought came in one of my Facebook birthday greetings this past Wednesday. Blu Faulkner, who talked about a sermon I preached in Atlanta more than 25 years ago and wrote: “Once upon a time, there was a preacher at First MCC church in Atlanta. I was invited to attend through Angel Blacker. I, myself, being a “recovering Baptist” preacher’s kid, I wanted really nothing to do with church…I visited. You were preaching that day. I didn’t hear about hell, fire, and brimstone. I heard about an all-inclusive love, that I mattered, and that I was a child of God. You were the one who changed my mind about wanting to be a part of church and religion again. So, all that to say, I can’t be the only person who’s felt loved and safe because of your sermons. I’m not certainly the last. Happiest of birthdays to you, J R.”
What a difference the Christian Church would be in America and around the world if that simple message was the distinguishing message heard in every church worship service that Nothing means “Nothing can separate us from the love of God”
