NOTE FROM PASTOR JR FOR SUNDAY, JANUARY 23, 2022
This Sunday will be Third Sunday after the Epiphany. Last Sunday, I began an Epiphany season sermon series, titled, “The Ways of Steadfast Love.” The series is premised on the assigned lectionary readings for these next several Sundays. In them, God’s steadfast love is a prominent theme. The series began with this verse from Psalm 36:7, “How precious is Your steadfast love, O God! All people may take refuge I the shadow of Your Wings.”
As a family of faith our job is to help people “take refuge (in God’s Steadfast Love) and under the shadow of God’s wings.” This sermon series is designed to do just that. This week, in the assigned text from I Corinthians 12:12-31, Paul continues to talk about doing it with the gifts God has given us “for the common good,” saying in verse 18, “But in fact God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as He wanted them to be. In other words, God has gifted us as part of the Body (of Christ) and placed us where God has gifted us to worship God and serve others most effectively.
And the fact is we don’t best demonstrate “The Ways of Steadfast Love” by using our gift alone. No, it is in the “Blending of Our Gifts in Serving Others,” that people experience and see God’s steadfast love in action and making a difference in the lives of humanity and God’s creation around them. After all, earlier Paul said, “So we are to use our different gifts in accordance with the grace that God has given us.” (I Cor. 12:6)
So, join us for worship this week at Covenant by Zoom or Facebook Livestream where we continue our journey of discovering “The Ways of Steadfast Love,” and then using them by “Blending Our Gifts in Serving Others.” That’s the title of my Part 2 sermon based on I Corinthians 12:12-31.
