NOTE FROM PASTOR JR FOR SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 7, 2021
This Sunday is the 5th Sunday After the Epiphany. It is also the first Sunday of Black History Month in America. And it is the First Sunday in the month in which Covenant celebrates its 40th Anniversary of being “An inclusive community of faith – Offering Hope + Showing Faithfulness + Sharing Joy.”
2020 was a year of the unexpected, filled with uncertainties and tension. 2021 has begun with those same anxieties as the pandemic in some way has continued to adversely affect us all. Yet in many ways throughout it all we have seen and continue to see the faithfulness of God, God’s presence, and power in our midst. I shared such on Facebook this week, when a Covenant family member went into surgery not knowing how much of her leg would be amputated; her foot, leg below the knee or above, as the leg and foot was dying. In a last-ditch effort, the doctor tried one last experimental process to get the blood flowing to it again and praise God it worked! So, she woke up to no amputation; with hopes the procedure will also address her pain.
On this 5th Sunday after the Epiphany, 1st Sunday of Black History Month and month of Covenant’s 40 Anniversary, we are not sure what our tomorrows have in store for us. But like Ira Stanphill observes in his song; “Many things about tomorrow, I don’t seem to understand. But I know who holds tomorrow; And I know who holds my hand.” Because of it, each day I wait for renewed strength. Isaiah 40:30-31 promises that though “Even youth will faint and be weary, and the young will fall exhausted; but those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.”
