While the actual day of Epiphany is January 6, we will observe “The Epiphany of Our Lord” this Sunday which is closest to that date. Also, we will observe this Sunday as our last Sunday of Worship in Center Point, as we make the move next week to The United Church Center in the Lake View area of Birmingham.
The word Epiphany comes from a Greek verb which means “to shine upon,” or “to make known.” The Feast of Epiphany celebrates the many ways Christ has made Himself known to the world. In the assigned text from Matthew 2, King Herod is chasing Jesus to kill Him; as he sees the Babe born in Bethlehem as a threat to him and his power. He deceptively employs the Magi, who were trying to find Jesus to worship Him and bring Him gifts, into helping him chase down Jesus. Fortunately, being warned in a dream they do not help Herod in his bid to chase down and kill Jesus.
In 2020, life will present us many options and opportunities. Some of them will be opportunities that chase you to bring wonderful things into your life such as the gifts from the Magi. Others will chase you to bring you harm such as King Herod. But the fact remains opportunities, requirements, requests and distractions will chase you every day.
One of the greatest decisions you can make is to get out in front of your own life and decide what you will chase; rather than just reacting to all that chases you. Try these words as “A 2020 Epiphany for Your Life.” Isaiah 60:1, “Arise, shine; for your light has come, and the glory of the LORD has risen upon you.”
