NOTE FROM PASTOR J R FOR SUNDAY, AUGUST 14, 2016

Many of us are very good at compartmentalizing our lives. The problem is that this often prevents us from seeing the importance integrating the various parts of our lives. I think we do that with our faith lives also. Too often this happens in our journeys of faith. We fail to see how coming to know and experience God’s unconditional love, forgiveness, and acceptance should impact how we live our lives.

I’m in the middle of a 3 part sermon series on Covenant’s Vision statement which is “To be an inclusive community of faith – Offering Hope + Showing Faithfulness + Sharing Joy.” The emphasis this week is “Showing Faithfulness.” So this week I’ve made a special effort to notice ways we are living out the vision of “Showing Faithfulness” of our vision outside of worship on Sunday morning and Wednesday evening, not in words but in deeds.

Covenant received a “Thank You Note” from First Light, a shelter for women and children for the food we took them.

We received a “Thank You Note” from Greater Birmingham Ministries for Food for the 300 lunches we prepared for 60 poor kids in a day care supported by them.

A volunteer crew came in to provide janitorial services.

A volunteer crew cooked a wonderful Wednesday night dinner. One gay couple invited a straight couple to this dinner and paid for their dinner.

The staff developed a special outreach effort to visitors.

Volunteers came in to supplement our administrative services to our community.

Our week time of Intercessory Prayer …

These were just a few ways of the many ways I observed Covenant “Offering Hope” through “Showing Faithfulness” this week. As a Pastor, it made my heart glad to see the many ways we are living out our vision.

Join us in worship this week at Covenant in our vision of being an inclusive community of faith with an extravagant welcome to all. Come and experience the excitement of worship that will this week include baptism, the reception of new members and a special time of prayer for students, teachers and parents for the new school year.

I will be continuing the series on our Covenant Vision statement “Part 2 – The Vision is Showing Faithfulness.” The scripture text is “Lamentations 3:21-26.”
